All Eva's plants are seed grown and have been selected for 'super hardiness' over a period of more than 10 years in the garden. They bloom most years above the snowline, except if a prolonged spell of minus 35*C occurs. A few days of it does not seem to matter. As well the R. mucronulatum has been able to withstand freezing and heavy frost when budding out and flowering, unlike a bought plant of the closely related R dauricum that most years gets its flower buds killed in the spring by late spring freezes. (It's a great foliage plant though!) *2. - Dwarf form from Cheju Island. *3. The Clethra is a super shrub - beautiful peeling orangey bark. Eva collected seed over 20 years ago in the Smoky Mountains TN, and it is one of the hardiest shrubs in her garden. Seven or so years ago when she had minus 40*C for several weeks in a row and daytime temperatures not much higher, not a single twig was damaged on any of the ten or so Clethras that she has in the garden. The R. mucronulatum survived as well - though did not bloom and suffered some leaf buds damage. Peder Hjorth Jensen, Denmark, zone 6 377. R. japonicum, red, op Hideaki Ohazama, Japan 378.
