The only R. occidentale range that I have not collected seed is the Cascade Mountains and the Sierra Nevada which I have not explored. In an area not to far from the coast, R. occidentale ranges from the middle of Oregon to Monterey County in California. The "wild azaleas" mentioned by John Steinbeck in East of Eden is R. occidentale, but unfortunately this population, located near Salinas, California in Monterey County, which may be the southern most population of the coastal range, is not open to the public. R. occidentale heads from the coast eastwards on rivers such as the Rogue River, and tributary rivers such as the Illinois River. Do not know how far East this range extends. I have explored the area not far from the Illinois River that is near Eight Dollar Road. Another range of R. occidentale extends from the Cascades to the Sierra Nevada, and R. occidentale can be found in Yosemite and at Sequoia National Forest. I have not explored this range. In southern California the Western Azalea is found in isolated islands above 4,000 feet in elevation in places such as Palomar Mountain, Cuyamaca Mountain, and the San Jacinto Mountains. During the weekend before Thanksgiving, I was collecting seed in Southern California. There was light snow on Mount Palomar, where I spent the night at the Observatory Campground, and quite a bit of snow in the San Jacinto Mountains, which because of the snow I did not visit. 406. c.w. macrophyllum, from Low Divide Road, Del Norte County, California 407. c.w. neoglandulosum, from East of Highway 1, Sea Ranch, Sonoma County, California 408. c.w. occidentale, AO 2 R. occidentale discovered by Cameron Ainsworth and Howard Oliver on a Mike McCullough R. occidentale expedition in 1991 to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Santa Cruz County, California. 2” white flowers with an orange flare with a white line running down the middle, 22 flowers per truss.
