Bladplader ovale, bredt ovale, elliptiske, elliptisk-ovale eller aflange-elliptiske, [tider tyndt puberulent på unge blade] glatte undtagen på midribben. Blomsterstand [subapical,] 1-blomstret. Blomsterbægerets lapper store og brede, glatte eller med korte kirtelhår eller pubescence på margenen. Blomsten er vredet eller stort set tragtformet; røret kortere end de lapper, sjældent længere, lapper udbredelse; støvdragere 5, ulige; frugtknuden med 5 encellede, med korte kirtel hår; griffel glat, eller med korte kirtelhår i nærheden af basen. Kapsel konisk, æggeformet. Frø uden terminal adnexa.

Tsutsusi (Sweet) Pojark. (Ericaceae) and is mainly distributed from China to Japan as well as eastern Asia. A taxonomic revision of section Brachycalyx is proposed and eight species with one subspecies are recognized. Rhododendron dilatatum Miq. var. decandrum Makino is newly recognized at the new rank of subspecies as R. dilatatum subsp. decandrum (Makino) X. F. Jin & B. Y. Ding. Lectotypes are designated for R. dilatation var. glaucum Hatus., R. farrerae Tate ex Sweet var. leucotrichum Franch., R. mariesii Hemsl. & E. H. Wilson, R. reticulatum D. Don ex C. Don, and R. wadanum Makino.
