Section Pentanthera

Buske, opretvoksende, sjældent træagtige eller løvfældende, nye skud kommer fra de 1 år gamle bladknopper, unge skud undertiden randhårede, ikke skællede, kirtelhårede, filtede eller glatte. Vinterknopper med mange overlappende skæl, grene og blade hidrørende fra nedre del af knopper. Blade spredte eller verticillate. Bladplade ikke skællet. Blomsterstand endestillede (dannes udaf en et år gammel knop) mangeblomstrede og klasen kan være kort eller lang. Blomsterbæger er som regel små, sjældent op til 6 mm; blomsterkrone tragt-klokkeformede, eller rør-klokkeformet, røret er ca. så lange, eller markant kortere end kronbladene, svagt lådne på ydre overflade, ofte med kirtler eller glatte, med eller uden pletter; støvdragere 5 - (10), sidder inde i tragten eller ragende ud af denne; 4N clade: atlanticum, austrinum, caledulaceum, colemanii, luteum
2N clade: alabamense, arborescens, canadense, cansecens, cumberlandense, eastmanni, flammeum, occidentale, periclymenoides, prinophyllum, prunifolium, viscosum

4V clade laver ikke frø, hvis de bliver bestøvet med en 2n. Hvis en 2n bliver bestøvet med en 4n laves der en 3n.

For the Love of Native Azaleas  


Norht American 4n deciduous azaleas do not accept pollen from North American 2n deciduous azlaeas is becuase most if not all of the literature on North American decidous azaleas implies they all cross excluding canadense and vaseyi.

What appears to be true when doing hand crosses is 4ns easily cross with 4ns, 2ns easily cross with 2ns (excluding vaseyi and canadense), 2ns accept pollen fron 4ns resulting in 3ns, and 4ns reject pollen from 2ns.

I am very interested in knowing about any personally documented instances where a known 4n deciduous azalea of the 4n clade accepts pollen from a known North American 2n of the 2n clade. There are some in the literature but I looking for something that can be repeated by multiple people.
