Mountain laurel, kalmia latifolia, is considered by many to be the most beautiful evergreen shrub. Once only thought of as a roadside attraction in the eastern states, it is increasingly popular as a garden ornamental. Native to North America and a member of the heath family along with rhododendrons, azaleas and blueberries, Kalmia grows well in most temperate climates, although species are found in subartic zones and tropical mountains. More drought tolerant than rhododendrons. Kalmia is not an easy plant to domesticate, so gardeners will welcome the complete information to successfully grow laurel from seed, tissue culture, cuttings, and grafting.
