Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. Two centuries or enterprising botanical exploration. often in remote foreign
wildernesses. have brought rare and exotic plants. trees and shrubs to these shores. This has been complemented by a succession or innovative gardeners
who have used the potential of their glorious landscape and provided the vision to make a Shangri-la for future generations.
The book draws on the photographic collection compiled by Brinsley Burbidge for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to present an extensive
record or Scotland’s gardens. These images demonstrate both remarkable diversity and also. as Fay Youngs commentary emphasises. the presence or a
real sense of Scottishness. It is a presence felt at every level: in the almost sub-tropical influence of the Gulf Stream washing the western shores and in
the intimacy of the walled gardens of the wind-battered east.
