Progress in study and introduction in horticulture of the montaane-tropical Rhododendron flora of Malesia lagged very much behind although over a century ago Thomas Lobb, plant hunter of Messrs Veitch, Exeter, and some decades later Frederick B. Burbidge, of the same firm, collected in Sumatra, Java, Malaya, and Borneo. Both observed the beautiful largde-flowered species of Mt. Kinabalu, in North Borneo. However, the number of their successful introductions was very limited ( see page 477). The main reason for this disappointing outcome must have been the difficulties connected with live transport of cuttings or seed, and the fact that these montane-tropical species are generally not hardy in temperate climates. The wealth of Malesian Rhododendron, of which in this revision 288 species and some additional varieties are described, That is about one third of all species known in the genus, remained also long hidden from taxonomical science

With 53 drawings, photographs and maps of distribution, and provided with a specially prepared Introduction and Index. The book is partly a reprint from Flora Malesiana ser.I, vol. 6, part 4.
