R. catawbiense (Pontica). Opretvoksende bred busk op til 2 m på 10 år. Blade 7-15 x 3-5 cm buede og glatte (med få små hår).
Hvid-grøn underside ofte med mørkere bred kant. Blomsrterstand med 8-20 blomster der er lilla-purpur. Frugtknuden er kraftigere filtet end blomsterstilken,
der kan være uhåret. Calyx 1 mm. Vildtvoksende på Roan Highlands, North Carolins og Virginia ved 1200 - 2500 m
I modsætning er R. ponticum's kapsel helt glat eller lidt håret, og en blomsterstilk der er kraftigere håret.

That is on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Pisgah around milepost 419-420. It is a huge plant and towers overhead, but
most people walk right past and don't even notice it. Most of the flowers are quite high.
Haven't noticed red pigmentation in its new growth, though.

Normalt blomstrer R. catawbiense i midten maj og R. maximum først i juli, men der kan sikkert være overlap.
